Concept end goal

Problems I want to solve with my design:

On sunny days and during events the square is full of people. In the winter the square is used too little. Now a lot of people walk past the square or use it as a shortcut. Especially in the evening the dark square becomes a black hole in the city.

It is a very recognizable spot of Rotterdam and the large open space is easy to use for events. The theater is a dynamic place for many different activities and performances.

But because of this, the theater becomes too static with no own explicit identity; it is a public space suitable for every performance. This makes the foyer very neutral and the amazement of the performances starts only in the theater hall.

How am I going to solve this with my design:

I want to make the square to be more inviting to stay there. More seats in the sun and shelter from the wind or rain and a high object to climb should help to reach this goal.

The places that "live" in the evening are already present on the edge of the square. There the square has to become a lively place where people feel safe. Light plays a major role here and also hierarchy of open space is very important.

I am going to try to improve the square and solve the problems without changing everything. And get people from the flow that is parallel to the square towards the square.

In the foyer of the theater I am going to add an element that makes it more unique and less clean or static.

Conclusion :

Make the square a pleasant place to stay at any time. This by adding some new elements and patterens. Also create a smooth flow from the crowd towards the theater and the foyer with a more explicit atmosphere.

Concept:

A flowing stream to a lively place
